Viessmann’s product range includes not only various heat generators but also the corresponding components for district heating systems. This means you receive a complete system from a single source, with all components optimally matched, straight from the factory. This Vitoset range includes various types of underfloor heating, which has increasingly become standard in new buildings in recent years. However, it is also increasingly being installed in existing buildings. Here you can learn how it works, what advantages it offers, especially compared to traditional radiators, and which types Viessmann offers.

Advantages of underfloor heating

What you can expect from a Vitoset underfloor heating system:

Economical, energy-saving operating mode

High level of comfort and convenience

High operational reliability and long service life

Consistently high quality that meets the standards

Outstanding quality of both individual components and the entire system

Optimally selected system elements

Safe and time-saving installation

A special advantage : Thanks to the large heat exchanger surface, the underfloor heating can be operated at very low flow temperatures in combination with ultra-low and low temperature boilers, condensing boilers, heat pumps and many other Viessmann products.

How does underfloor heating work?

A distinction should be made between electric and hydronic underfloor heating. Viessmann sells an electric version in its Vitoplanar line. The basic function of both options is the same. As a room heating system, underfloor heating distributes heat throughout the entire floor surface. As a result, many people find it very pleasant. Furthermore, relatively low heat delivery temperatures are possible, as noted in the “Advantages” section. A hot water underfloor heating system is connected to a central heat generator. The electric Vitoplanar underfloor heating system operates independently and is typically used in modernization projects. Below, we’ll discuss hot water underfloor heating and its specific features in terms of structure, functions, and installation systems.

Underfloor heating components

Underfloor heating is installed using either a wet or dry system. With a wet underfloor heating system, the heating pipes are laid directly into the heated screed, thus surrounding it. This method is particularly suitable for new buildings, as the flooring is being laid for the first time. Heat is distributed through the heated screed. In contrast, a Viessmann dry underfloor heating system is installed within an insulating layer. Here, the heating pipes are laid directly under the flooring within dry screed panels. Therefore, the dry underfloor heating option is most often chosen for renovation projects, i.e., if you want to retrofit an underfloor heating system.

For both options, the following components are important:

  • Insulating layer (including shockproof)
  • Edge insulating tape
  • Heating pipes
  • Support systems (including mats, pressure rails)
  • Heated or dry screed panels
  • Floor covering

Tip: When it comes to flooring, you have a wide range of design options. Just make sure the manufacturer has approved the flooring for use with underfloor heating. The following flooring options are available: ceramic tiles, slabs, natural stone, concrete blocks, textile flooring, PVC, linoleum, laminate, parquet, and cork. Particular attention should be paid to thermal conductivity. It should match the respective heating requirements and heating behavior. It is best to consult with a Viessmann partner for detailed advice beforehand.

Various types: stud, laying and modernization systems

Viessmann offers three systems for underfloor heating. The stud and treadle system is the best choice for installing a wet system. The tacker system for hydronic underfloor heating is characterized by laying the pipes on coated insulation boards and securing them with special tacker clips. With the stud system, the heating pipes are laid between the studs and require no additional fastening. The structure of the tenon plates ensures minimal spacing at all times. Both rectangular and diagonal installations are possible.

The retrofit system is particularly suitable for renovation projects. This means it can be installed over existing screeds. The Viessmann underfloor heating retrofit system is even suitable for other types of radiant heating, such as wall or ceiling heating. In addition to the system boards, the system consists of matching system pipes. A fast-hardening, highly effective filler and grouting compound is used to ensure optimal adhesion to the substrate. Suitable materials include concrete, cement screed, calcium sulfate screed, or ceramic coating. Careful preparation of the substrate is essential.

Control and regulation technology via the app

Optimal setup of a Viessmann underfloor heating system is crucial. Control technology is at the core of this. Key components include:

  • Heating circuit distributor
  • Drive
  • Temperature limiter
  • Room thermostat

All Viessmann Vitoset control components comply with the current Energy Efficiency in Buildings Act (GEB) and are optimally matched to the Vitoset underfloor heating system. Individual room temperature controllers allow for demand-based control and efficient energy use. The control technology was specifically developed for the combination of a heat pump and underfloor heating. In addition to using this combination for heating, a key focus was on using the heat pump and underfloor heating for cooling.

Control of underfloor heating also via the app

Viessmann underfloor heating can also be controlled digitally and optimally adjusted to your needs. This is possible using the Vitofloor app , specifically designed for underfloor heating, or the ViCare app, which controls the entire system or the central heating system, including the underfloor heating as part of the overall system. In both cases, you save energy by monitoring consumption and making quick adjustments. You also improve your comfort. The system can be controlled on the go or even from the comfort of your couch via WiFi.

The Vitofloor app, a direct link to your underfloor thermostat, provides convenient access to all heating zones. Your advantage: Numerous functions allow you to easily control the desired temperature, even in summer. Furthermore, automated time programs or intuitive manual controls ensure a high level of user convenience.
